Dumini Joseph Verloin deGruy (1785-1840)

Dumini Joseph Verloin deGruy was the son of Francois Joseph DuFouchard Verloin DeGruy (1752 – 1830) and Marianne Couturier (1753-1819). His name was probably meant to be Dumesnil at some point, but appears in the records as everything from Dumini to Dominy to Duminic.  His siblings included:

• Francois Joseph Dumenil DuFouchard Verloin deGruy (1781-1840)
• Julie Delphine Josephine Verloin DeGruy (1792 – 1845)
• Thomas Antoine Benoit DuFouchard V DeGruy ( – 1822)
• Gabriel Gaspard (Picket) Pitot (1774 – 1794) (half-brother)

He married Charlotte Falgout (1788-1858) on 13 Jul 1812.  Witnesses to the marriage included Louis Courtiere; Luis Marcel Falgout; Juan Bautista Marce (Mars) (ASM-2, 194. Diocese of Baton Rouge, 1804-1819, V3 P255).  Their children included:

• Marguerite Virginie DeGruy (1825 – ) m. Joseph Picou?

The 1820 census for Lafourche Parish, P112, head of household Duminy Verloin, shows:

• 1 male, 26-45 [(Joseph) Duminy duFouchard Verloin, b. 1789]

• 2 females, <10 [(Marie) Laure duFouchard Verloin deGruy, b. 1817 & (Marie) Corrine duFouchard Verloin deGruy, b. 1819]

• 1 female, 16-26 [Charlotte Falgout, b. 1797]

• no slaves.

The 1850 census for Bayou Lafourche shows:

There may be some errors here – I’m still sorting out the confusion from having the two brothers conflated for so long.

See this note from Vicki Pruet re the long-held issue of researchers listing Charlotte Falgout as a second wife of Francois Joseph Dumenil (which is a widespread error).

A contributor posted this info from a DAR descendant to the DEGRUY-L list, which suggests that somewhere there should be military records that might help us distinguish between these two brothers and figure out what Dumini Joseph was up to:
